28/02/2010

one more sleep until it all begins, except for a noticable absence of login details for ECO11, I realise that South Australia is the "bong state", but I hope to god they are emailing me something out at midnight or at least by 7am tomorrow.
A productive Sunday with the completion of my SASk12 quickskills module in the afternoon, and no I did not rush it, I have just done it before and thoroughly scrutinised it during the quickskills modules 3 weeks ago.It is due in week 2, so i will wait a few days to upload it, at least then, it is gone.at 5% of the total, it is not of huge importance, but I would like to get 5% up my sleeve, only 40% to go then, of course a high distincion is the goal.
More microeconomics text reading this afternoon, and just finished the section on elasticity, with a reasonable comprehension of the concepts, terminology and mathamatical equations.
With the questions at the end of the chapter, I was initially able to answer (In my head) approximately 1 in 10 confidently, and now at the end of chapters I would say 7 or 8 out of 10 would receive a suitable response.I believe my undestanding of the disipline of economics and ability to understand what I am reading is improving dramatically.the words and terms are no less foreign, but my comprehension of the explainations and applications is way above where it was a week ago.I need to buy another text, and i will do it in a week or so, although the chap I bought the one I have from, never aquired it and said he didn't need it.i will seek any advantage presented however.Approximately 4.5 hours studying today.

27/02/10

Saturday, traditionally a day of rest and relaxation, I had look through the SSK12 unit outline, and checked in with with the facebook groups.I continued with the LITE unit and completed another 2 modules. Facebook was a hive of activity with people discussing logins, lecturers, lecture groups and course content.great to see that the stress of waiting has been lifted, now the stress of study will set them all off again. It was great to see that the assignment outline I found on facebook and have almost completed is in the current unit structure, so I am far enough ahead for me to feel comfortable.I don't like to wait and follow the normal patern when I can create a buffer, and I am about 3 weeks ahead as it stands, having read the entire reader, and unit text, as well as having a very near complete assignment in my files.
It was nice to spend a couple of hours in the morning on the microeconomics text and I am a third of the way through it and understanding it.The math is making a lot more sense the farther I read through, and the logic of such ideas as demand and supply and elasticity in general are not just sinking in, but fascinating.I don't know if I could go down the economics path, but I can see how people change degrees and majors as they gain interests in new fields.
I spent maybe 2.5 hours in total today on my work, and that is not bad for a Saturday.

26/02/10

Micro economics was the focus this morning, but with shopping and other distractions, i found only a couple of hours to read.Price elasticity is starting to make sense and the math side of it is less scarey now.
My 'tutor' was over at 8.30 and we spent until midnight adressing a few areas of concern, they were:
1) the dewey decimal system used to file books, this was part of the SSK12 lITE section.I was stuck because some had .848 and .997 and one example had no numbers at all, of course I now realise that the absence of a number equates to zero, and that's less than .9.
2)Algebra equations had me stuck, and it was mainly working out what the symbols are asking me to do and dividing negatives means you multiply them? how would I have worked that one out.
3) fine tuning Assignment 1 SKK12, granted it is due in week five, and it's not day 1 yet, but I have it almost in it's final draft.I will fine tune it once more and present it in week 2 or 3.
3.5 hours well spent, and I am haining confidence daily. No login details have arrived for ECO11, so I may need to ring them on monday.

23/02/10

Well,I planned to read my microeconomics text today, and that's all I did.
Pages 51-92 continued with chapter 2 "the economising problem and it seems to be a brief run through of random systems, terminologies, a few statistics and an overview of the different economic systems,ie,Laissez faire Capitalism,Command(Communist and mixed systems, like ours.I see what they mean about our capitalist leanings, and as much as I am repelled by the Command system, I fear the selling of public assests is steering us more into a Monopolistic Laissez Fair, capitalist, economy ruled by goliath, multi-national companies disguised as true blue locals. In turn they endevour to push the market prices up to the point where their own workers can't afford the basics with the meager wages they are paid, largely due to the fact that they can pay according to a state or federal award system as suits them.Although coles is owned by west farmers, I wonder what percentage is owned by Australians,True, the foriegn investment dollars boost our exchange rate, but the heartless, mechanical, bulldozer nature of groups like Coles including,(K mart,First Choice, Liquorland, Target,Vintage Cellars,Shell),and Woolworths group, (BWS, Dan Murphies, Woolworths plus)tends to close down our small businesses where the genuine service is and employ robots to train in their methods,"Would you like fries with that?", "Do you want a bag?","Can I interest you in 3 for the price of 2?", where is the personality.
the zombies who serve at the supermarket chains don't care if you have a nice day, they just want their pittance to cover the next bill.retail is a seathing cesspool of broken dreams, disenchanted teens and mature age employees who are roped in by the hype the Snake oil salespeople, or "Human Resource managers" create with promises of advancement, appreciation and stability.
The only one you get is stability as it is virtually impossible to get fired with the Unfair dismissal laws being so strict, and every opportunistic deadbeat trying to sue for unfair dismissal etc.we brought this on ourselves by supporting franklins in the 80's anmd Kmart even earlier.how many butchers are left now compared to 10 years ago, and look at the water injected 3rd rate mince we can now pick up at exorbitant prices and feed to our unsuspecting families.

22/02/10

A reasonably productive day, with 7.30 to 11.00 spend reading A Guide to independant Learning Pages180-213, yes I am a slow reader, and granted there was the odd distraction, but I do take my time, as I find increasing my pace even just a little removes all comprehension of what I am reading,Know your limits and do not exceed them, however, where boundaries don't exist, do not create them.
the discussion section was worth a read, but I may have little chance to apply the techniques, although i got some good ideas for the facebook groups. The "Developing your writing", section made a lot of points which confirm things I do and a few I shall begin to use.I'm also enjoying "Writing Essays", i think my biggest hurdle is that I think i can write accademically, therefore if I am wrong, I can't perceive how.
I did a bit of chapter 4 exercise 1,2 and 3 about my reading style and preferences before realising that I have done most of it before and clearly did not save it, It is just one of those rudimentary,"Think about how you wipe your ass, explain why", activities.
I read pages 29-51 of microeconomics and battled cintinued the previous days battle with the equation y=a+bx, finally got it from calculating the slope, realising the verticle intercept does not halve when found between variable mumerals and applying the brackets where applicable,ie [50+(0.5x300)
I can't believe that 2 days of deductive thinking and critical analysis have taught me more than 10 years of school. This builds a strong case for developing critical thinkers, not just walking encyclopedias.
Graphs are not scaring me so much, and although hesitant, I believe math will slow me down, but when it falls into place, I shall enjoy it and a new understanding of the world at large,I would love to read stephen Hawkings books and understand them, or rather, I shall.
very glad to be off the graphs and into more explanation of terminology, although i could not recount much of what I have read, I am starting to understand the terms in context when the pop up, and will certainly comprehend much of the microeconomics vernacular by the start of SP1.
That's all I ask, and I feel as though I am well on track for success.
As a swot analysis, just for fun, my Strenghts, weaknesses, oportunities and threats are:
strenghts-My reading skills, curiosity, Aannalytical skills, tanacity,
weaknesses- impatience, math skills, anger, distracted(although generally uni related)
opportunities-time, family support, feedback from teacher friend, motivated
threats- noisy household, relationship breakdown(not likely, but possible) motivation, defeatest attitude,
Judging by how things are going, 5 days before the start date, I am confident, becoming fluent in the language, focussed, determined and have the competative edge.

21/02/10

Not much today, Sunday is a day of rest and that's what i dida look at Microeconomics 8 and battled to understand the equation C=a+bY for a couple of hours.Clearly my brain is not trained to think in this way, one of Donald Rumsfeld's "Known Unknowns", a am fully aware the idea exists, I just don't know how it works yet.I have had 2 big breakthoughs so far and will persevere. After all, I still have7 days of study before it starts and I have to actually learn this stuff, hopefully some will just be reitterated as I will get a bit of it, that will be enough of a headstart for me.
Microeconomics scares the shit out of me and not because of the concepts and ideas, they strangely compliment my way of thinking perfectly, but the math and graoh side may cause me to swallow my pride early and ask for help.
I will do more SSk stuff early tomorrow, then spend a few hours on economics math problems.ironically, not working the equation, but rather working out how to work out the equation.
Facebook is going ok, the Brisbane group continues to dissapoint me, with no input from 80 percent, and little productive input from the rest.I may start kicking people out if they have not contributed after the first 2 or 3 weeks.fuck them, I can't stand moochers.

19/02 and 20/02

Literally had a day off, with the shopping in the morning, then drinks in the evening.
I read a few pages of Jackson and McLivers Microeconomics 8.Getting used to the terminology such as variables,Positive and normative economics, aggregate, Fallacy of Composition, Marginal analysis, ceteris paribus.
This one is goping to be hard, i have to learn how to interpret graphs.Saturday I spent relaxing with my family, and at times alone. It was good to deny myself the pleasure of reading so i don't get sick of it.

18/02/10

I got my micoeconomics text books today, I love getting new books.
To receive second hand books in such good condition was nice too, The previous owner clearly values the written text, or breezed on through without using them.
I spent from 8am until 10am on SSK12 a reading companion, completing Chapter 4 activity 4 thorough preview of a text.
i also started to type out a template based on the example in the book so that i do this whenever I get a new book.
I spent an hour on the online groups, and am starting to see a division in the group.A healthy division however which will encourage the natural order of things and create 2 distinct groups, each with it's own specific purpose.
When I started the facebook SSK12 group, I had no idea what overall purpose it would serve, or rather I knew it would be important, I just didn't know how important, and on how many levels.
Now with the creation of My google group, as a purpose built formal discussion group, the facebook group will provide a safe haven for those who want a security blanket and a recruitment ground for the more esoteric google group.
the risk of the open format style of the facebook group is the same thing that enhances it's intrinsic value, ie the diversity of the people.
The problematic issues arise from the fact that 31 different people have 31 different world views, and 31 different ego's which need to feel in control.
Some of us want to get ahead and drag others up with us, while secretly enjoying the feeling of being in control of ourselves, out group, our future, and our learning.
Others want to meet people and contribute nothing, some have not introduced themselves and they will gain little by waiting until firm bonds are created to try to break into the group.
Still others seem to have joined to varify that others feel as losy and helpless as them selves, these people attempt to contribute critique on topics raised but generally, innevitably end up in a defensive argument about why they will fall behind(Excuses in advance) and why others are ahead of themselves and probably on the wrong track.
Two of these groups, the 1st and last always endevour to recruit others to their way of thinking, the first to gain ideas, information, support, and of course the respect and awe of others.this group needs to do little as underachievers are drawn to them as they may have the answers.
the last group works harder to recruit and success is limited, the time they spend defending themselves and explaining their particular restrictions and therefore shortcomings, is time which would be better spent learning. The truth about these actions is that they are a clever disguise for the unwillingness to ask for help, support or advice from those who are in control, as well as an unwillingness to apply the techniques.
These people are not a danger to anyone but themselves and the people in the second group have potential to go either way, therefore the middle group are statistically more likely to prove thier worth later as they appear to be fence sitting and often are quietly scrutinising to establish where they might fit in.

I want to quote a quote "Never has civilization been more in need of humane and vital intelligence than here at the door of Armageddon",Michael Luttrel
Quoted by John Rasor, "Education as healing;Cabbages and kings." 1997
lets critically Analyse this statement. "never has civilisation" civilisation being the advanced state of human cultural development. "been more in need of vital intelligence"need-requiring or being in a state which neccesitates without yield, "humane',-"characterized by tenderness, compassion, and sympathy for people and animals, esp. for the suffering or distressed",- dictionary.com. and 'vital" -"pertaining to high levels of human energy, liveliness, or force of personality"- or -necessary to life- "Intelligence" -Capacity for learning, understanding and reasoning- "than here at the door of Armageddon, "Armageddon being a great and final war, the battlefied where it takes place, and great war.Not a building with an entrance as the writer suggests.
To reitterate.
"Never has civilization been more in need of humane and vital intelligence than here at the door of Armageddon",
so, Not once ever previously has the entire civilized history of the world experienced a greater absolute necessity for the understanding, comprehension and knowledge based on a compassionate, concerned and coscientious state of mind and absolutely critical to survival than here? at the phsical entry point to a building or area of the final battle of earth.
And all this was because he was dropping out of university after 4 years, my question is, how did he stay there that long.
A little overdramatic maybe? or perhaps this huge change he is about to embark on is the culmination of this turmoil and anguish he has endured for so long.
The Armageddon which he speaks of is not a traditional use of the word, but a metaphor for the battle within his soul.
"Never before has civilisation been more in need of Humane and vital intelligence. -Civilisation being defined as "any type of culture, society, etc., of a specific place, time, or group"
His culture, the very essence of his world view being systematically and calously destroyed, this is a dire circumstance to civilization as it relates directly to him and his perception of the great truths.
The fundamental truths we know are familiarity, security, Surroundings,Predictability,Logic and
michaels concept of his civilization is an emotional battleground where only intelligence which is concerned, caring and contientious toward his plight and is "vital", ie, life giving will save him from the innevitability of falling by the wayside and his identity being erased for ever. His change of lifestyle and identity, innevitably reinvent him with a new paradigm and a new world view.he is no longer defined by the same set of values as when he was a student.
i'll come back to this one

16/02/10

7am out of bed, kid off to school, see ya
7.30 am checking Facebook, up to 24 members of the SSK12 group and 12 in the Brisbane university students group.
Some really nice people coming onboard and another male joind SSK12 today....Whaaaa?
yes it is a suprise, we have a dramatic discrepancy in numbers between male and female, the bris group is mostly female, except for me and one more. and there are 4 males in SSK12, the other 3 have not said a word.Interesting how Some were vocal in threads they started, yet appear to have joined begrudgingly, maintaining a silent protest that they are not the boss.wahhhhhh
Funny thing is, I have made one person administrator and am starting to feel detached emotionally from the concept of the physical SSK12 group, the novelty of a new experience, the "shiny new toy", so to speak has worn off, and now I consider the groups as a security blanket, I see that it operates autonomously and that my input enriches the content, but is not implicitly crucial to it's survival.
I have breathed life into an online entity, populated it with an array of personalities and now the cohesion of these ego's are working symbiotically for the greater good of the very entity they are connected to, that is to say, that the group, or room, is displaying a personality unique to itself.
I have created a being, and this is evident when a person askes a question and much like a human mind, the room becomes abuzz with intellectual activity, as people throw ideas back and forth, recall data and discuss prior experiences which may relate to the current query.
The human mind analogy becomes clearer with the grasp of the concept of cognative thought and information recall, that is to say that when a question arises, the mind searches it's vaults of knowledge and experience to apply a solution based on same or simular circumstances, processing ideas and assessing memory data until a feasable solution is accepted.
Just as the mind searches the hallways and recesses of itself for stored data, the room searches it's people and their individual information vaults for data.
enough already.
from 8.30 until 12pm with a snack in between and a couple of 5 minute breaks, i engaged in the labourious chore of reading The learning reader, pages 147-152, karen warren 1995, you owe me an hour of my life, and through to page 196.
I marked pages 183-187 Communicating at university, Bizzell 1986,
I shall read it, but for now it is nonsese and beyond my comprehension.this may be due to my world view being not aligned with the required thinking process required to understand the lingo, concepts and context, or possibly a superficiality and simplicity in my understanding of the content, due to critcal thinking Inadequacies I currently suffer from.
Or maybe it is just a pile of pretentious rubbish loaded to the brim with impressive words and concepts that are unproven therefore impossible to refute.
I shall revisit this topic

15/02/10

A good day today, up at 7am, On the computer at 7.30 checking updates on the facebook groups I started and then straight into reading at 8am.
A learning companion pages 121- 182, I was wondering why it felt like I was reading most of the day.
Chapter 4 section 15 activity 1-is a task for finding out what a book is about without reading it, and activity 5- is a quick one about marking up and making notes on readings.I of course would never highlight a book, that is sick.but I have started using post it notes and will do a few more activities to get them out of the was.
chapter 5 is basically about your reading style, techniques to retain information where required, make notes, skim for relevent information and preview books to get an understanding of their content and the writers style before you read them.
A most enjoyable section, and I have picked up a lot of good ideas.
A guide to independent learning pages 125-149- finished chapter 8 which is about sourcing information and utilising academic resources, just thinking laterally about where to find information and how to utilise the resource effectively.
Chapter 9 discusses reading, and the style, pace and techniques we use. the ways in which different texts and subjects have their own style and vocabulary, meaning thet one word may have a totally different application to what we are normally accustomed.Another interesting chapter.
I am hoping to get the 3 SSK12 books finished before March 1st and with more spare time, i am attempting to spend at least 5 hours per day on reading, networking, researching etc.
I cant wait til it actually starts.

12/02-13/02-14/01

nothing, nothing and more nothing.i learned nothing on these daus.
Seriously,I have not picked up a book and in a way,I guess I am just enjoying the calm before the storm, getting to know people on the facebook groups and really not stressing about the start date.
I have had to sort out work and that took a lot of my time and energy, mostly stressing and whining.
I am now casual and need not ever do another shift after this friday.Although I will want a couple of shifts per week to get me out of the house.
I am having trouble with the subject matter relating to the world view thing, and as a moderately intelligent and rather annalytical person,I believe that clutching at straws with a phd is still clutching at straws.i mean, we have no specific, scientifically proven.indesputable answers about "the self, the who am I and world view questions, and it just seems as though some academics are too proud to admit that it is a question for the individual to contemplate at times when they are feeling the need, but not a topic really worthy of wasting funding, consideration or conversation on.
This entry was heavily edited due to a half drunken, frustrated rant.
It really felt good to vent my frustration at the subject I am having ethical and intellectual problems with.I have little time for people who undulge themselves with smarmy, pretentious theoretical rhetoric and deep down i guess I just consider true academic achievement as definable by knowledge of facts and figures, rather than summisation and assumption.
I mean Einstein based his theories on proven formulae and his hypothesis were at least grounded in his understanding of actual scientific anylise who we are, and someone to judge if the answer is correct based on thjeir assumptions, presumptions and assertions on the topic is a touch concerning. We are to understand ourselves as individuals thus illustrating the fact that we are all inherently different in our essential thinking, anylkising and scrutinising skills, abilities, capacity and capabilities.Does this not leave the decission of what is a good answer and what is a 'wrong" answer at the mercy of an individual view based on the marking teachers word view/paradigm and their upbringing, socio economic postion, culture, class, education, demographic?
Scarey huh

10/02/10

What a productive day, not only do i now know how to make and add to a Blog, I have started a facebook group for studens studying SSK12 in SP1.Not only that, but we have 12 members already
It is wonderful to see the diversity of the people and I'm sure that were it not for Online Universities we would not have 18 year olds working together with 55 year olds.
It is a little suprising, but stands to reason that 10 of the members are female, a very noticable descrepency between the sexes.I guess the Monash statistics don't lie, and there are more females in tertiary education than males.
I wonder also whether there is an inate maleness at work and that most are leaving it to the last minute to make contact with others, thinking that the start date is indeed the day you must start.
Could it be this day and age that male pride and misguided egotism are at play also, with a '"I can do this myself", mentallity rearing it's head.
It seems that perhaps women are more considered and more inclined toward preparation, thus explaining their higher success rate in University study.
I gain great joy from reading the conversations between people who were just this morning, complete strangers and it will be fascinating to witness them grow as students and people.
I include myself in this of course, but I do take a mild guilty pleasure in seeing this as an experiment in social behaviour, and almost a game of sorts, where the aim is to make sure we all ace the Unit.
I feel as though the 2 weeks I have spent reading the text books and scouring the internet for resources, sources, samples and copies of previous assignments have given me a huge boost in confidence as well helped construct a certain understanding of what is ahead.
I feel that this time I shall not sit in the back row and instead will be the guy that gets things done, the go-to guy that finds the answers.I am reinventing myself and online is a marvellous place to start.

09/02/10

Up at 7.10 again, then on the computer at 8am
Started Quick skills module QSK130 Getting to Know Your Study Materials which ties in well with my reading later at work, Im am getting ready to start a study plan once i get my login details,Hopefully any day now.The crossover with A Guide to Learning Independently is in the discription of how to understand what is being asked in a question and how to best answer this.I am getting a better idea of how to approach assignment with regard to the thesis, opening point of the assignment and building the body of the argument, depending on what the question requires.
Accessing study material is clearer now and I have decided to try the caboolture library for resources as well as my epiphony for the day that it may be viable to enrol in a cheap course or two at TAFE as their resources are excellent and this may be cheaper than buying books.
My understanding of how to construct an assignment is becoming clearer and terminology will become easier to understand after I hear the same words a few times.
learning objectives are a new concept to me, and understanding what the expected outcome is will hopefully guide me on the journey, this is more desirable than going blind and hoping to hit the target.
I wonder what sort of student I will be, and I realise that the sort of worker I am and the way i think at home and socially won't cut it.
I have to accept that I am a clean slate in a lot of areas and that my ideas of intellegence, knowledge, learning and university life must be pushed aside so that a new reality can form with a different world view as the final objective.this must happen for me, not in spite of me.
I can't wait to get started

08/02/10

7.20-out of bed, get my son moving and send him off to the bus
8am reading, started the Penguin big book of small business, 5 pages in and not impressed.
Reading a learning companion again, pages 81-108. the topic is oral presentations, and I am unsure of the relevence as I may not get an orportunity to participate in group discussions or present information orally with my study being online.
I have satarted an assignment, yeah,ok so I don't know what my assignments will be,but I found a facebook page with one from las year and am practicing on it, even better if it turns out to be the current topic,I should be able to present a good assignment .

The Assignment asks me to use the concept of world view to Identify beliefs and attitudes,Particularly to education and learning That"I" bring to "My" learning.
I have to define world view for starters,or rather describe the concept of world view as according to the academics who have coined the phrase. As it is a fluid concept, without a specific truth and possibly infinite in it's aspects, the best plan may be to coverthe old cliches like Race, class,Australian culture, family influence, peers etc.
reference to hobson(1996) and Samover and Porter (2004) are required, must find out what these texts are.
My main issue is in what context should it be written if it is a personal account, considering academic writing is generally supposed to distance the writer from the subject matter.
The urge to write my life story and justify my academic mistakes is strong, and taking myself out of the picture is impossible, I may rely on references to justify my ideas and personal views, therefore I need to find a text which in the same head space as me.
perhaps, the books i have read over the years might provide an insight into the ideas that have shaped my world view,i must revise this.
A definition of world view will prove difficult and using appropriately accademic language whilst avoiding the temptation to sound pretentious will be the key here,I believe.

Introduction to my online learning log

Ok, so it's not really day one of my learning, just merely a starting point of logging my study and learning processes, experiences and procedures.
There are many reasons for the creation of this blog and they the main purposes are as follows
1) It is part of the Unit requirement and it is the request of the creators of the unit that I create a learning log
2) To assist the quality and quantity of my learning and enhance the overall University experience.
3)To record variations in my opinions, learning techniques and oeverall views on the learning experience, subject matter and University structure, and how it effects me personally.
4) To learn techniques which will assist my academic career progressively and continue into my career and beyond

the Degree I am pursuing is Bachelor of Business Studies through Open Universities Australia, and the degree will come from Monash, which I am really pleased about.
The first units I have chosen, or rather, the man at seek.com enroled me in to get me started, are SSK12-Introduction to University Learning, provided by Murdoch University. This unit can be used as an elective later so has two functions.
The second Unit is MAN11-Introduction to Mangagement, provided by Monash.

I have the required texts for SSK12, being GUIDE TO LEARNING INDEPENDENTLY 4/E and LEARNING COMPANION 4/E as well as the introduction to University Learning Reader, courtesy of Murdoch University.
I will require for MAN11-MANAGEMENT 5/E & MYMANAGEMENT LAB, this I will get next week.
